NRS 429VN – Transtheoretical Model (TTM)

NRS 429VN – Transtheoretical Model (TTM)

Re: Topic 1 DQ 2

A model for promoting health and changing behavior is the transtheoretical model (TTM). An example of behavior change is quitting smoking. According to Whitney (2018), this approach helps identify how ready a patient is to make necessary changes for better health. It’s divided into six stages:

– Precontemplation
– Contemplation
– Preparation
– Action
– Maintenance
– Termination

This model assists in behavior change by assessing where a person is in their journey to change. Knowing the stage can guide strategies to improve health. The first stage, precontemplation, is the initial hurdle that can affect a patient’s ability to learn. In this stage, a person isn’t even thinking about change. They might have considered it but lack the confidence or will to act. While they may know the risks of smoking, they aren’t mentally prepared for quitting. If a patient isn’t ready or motivated to learn or change, positive outcomes won’t be achieved (Whitney, 2018).

Describe a health promotion model used to initiate behavioral changes. How does this model help in teaching behavioral changes? What are some of the barriers that affect a patient’s ability to learn? How does a patient’s readiness to learn, or readiness to change, affect learning outcomes?

Response

The transtheoretical model is a beneficial framework for patients to introspect. It holds patients accountable for understanding the root of their issue. What’s great about this theory is that it breaks the process into stages or small steps for the patient. It helps maintain motivation by setting achievable goals. By assessing a patient’s readiness to change, a nurse can set appropriate behavioral goals based on the patient’s current stage (Whitney, 2018). I concur that if a patient isn’t prepared or motivated to learn or change their behavior, achieving goals becomes challenging (NRS 429VN – Transtheoretical Model (TTM)).
