I serve as the supervisor for the sterile processing department at the hospital, and I have noticed a distinct difference in the culture between my department and the operating team, including the nurses. Unfortunately, our communication is not always effective, with a 30% rate of miscommunication. To address this, we hold daily meetings, sometimes even multiple times a day. Despite our differences, our ultimate goal remains the same – ensuring the safety of the patients. One challenge we face is that the sterile processing team does not receive the recognition or respect that is rightfully deserved as members of the medical staff. Since our department is not directly involved in assisting the doctors in the operating room, we are often seen as an insignificant part of the surgical process. However, the truth is that the doctors would not be able to perform life-changing procedures in the operating room without the clean and sterilized instruments that we provide. The safety of the patients greatly depends on the meticulous work we carry out in our department downstairs.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Organizational Culture: Describe the organizational culture of the organization of your choice. Consider the following in your response:
- What is the organization’s mission and vision? Delivering top-notch healthcare services.
- How have you seen the organization’s mission and vision reflected in daily activities such as communication, management approaches, priorities, and so on? For my department we have Team huddles, Meetings with surgeons and nurses, rounding with other departments establishing partnerships. This is how providing quality care for the patient and the OR staff, we discuss issues with instruments and equipment.
- What does the organization value? Patient safety

- How did organizational culture play a role in the examples you provided?
- In the examples you provided, was the communication or behavior aligned with the culture the organization promotes? Why or why not? Consistently, the operating room culture fails to show respect towards the culture in the sterile processing department, posing a persistent challenge. The demands placed by the OR and the doctors exert immense pressure on my team. On certain occasions, a particular doctor schedules six identical cases in a day, all requiring the same set of instruments. However, the hospital only possesses four sets of the required instruments. Consequently, the sterile processing department is compelled to prioritize and expedite the turnover of this instrument set. Unfortunately, there are instances where this challenge cannot be overcome, resulting in the cancellation of surgeries if the instrument set is deemed a critical necessity.
- Leadership Style and Personality Traits: Discuss your leadership style and personality traits; focus specifically on how your leadership fits into an organizational culture. Consider the following in your response:
- What traits make you a strong leader, and how does this connect to the organizational culture you described? Please use the assessments I have attached to respond to this question.
