Electronic Medical Records(EMR) System Essay

Weekly Clinical Experience 4

The first real recommendation for technology to be used in healthcare came from the Institute of Medicine’s report in 1999 aptly titled To Err Is Human. The study discovered that numerous preventable deaths were occurring in hospitals due to foreseeable and preventable human errors. The recommendation was that technology should be adopted in healthcare to reduce medical errors and prevent deaths and disability (Palatnik, 2016). Later, legislation made it mandatory to have electronic health records (EHR) systems in every healthcare setting (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). This system electronically captures, stores, and retrieves patient data more conveniently. The electronic health record system consists of various components that work together to enable nurses and physicians to deliver coordinated treatment and care. One of these components is the electronic medical record (EMR). Other components include computerized provider order entry (CPOE), automated drug dispensing cabinets (ADCs), and bar code medication administration (BCMA), among others (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). This paper discusses the use of EMR at the writer’s clinical practice site.

E-Prescription and Adaptive Learning

E-prescription is incorporated into the center’s EMR from a company called Athena Health. This computerized provider order entry (CPOE) allows physicians to prescribe medication and automatically sends the prescription to the pharmacy while keeping a record in the patient’s electronic chart (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). The EMR also features adaptive learning technology and stores treatment preferences as well as the tests and prescriptions each clinician frequently orders.

Incorporated Patient Doorway, Documentation, Image Management, and Internet Connectivity

The EMR includes a patient doorway displaying vital signs, the brief reason for the visit, and short candidate instructions. Unfortunately, it lacks flexibility in the absence of internet connectivity, causing the system to freeze and slow down considerably. However, the EMR excels in documentation and offers state-of-the-art image management capabilities. From personal experience, the benefits of this EMR system outweigh the disadvantages. It has improved service efficiency and prevented numerous potential medical errors that could have jeopardized patient lives. It is an innovative technology that every healthcare worker should be familiar with.
