This template includes pre-set margins, page numbers, and page breaks. You don’t need to make any changes to them. Avoid adding extra spaces between the heading and the text (you can check the spacing under “Format” and “Paragraph” in your word processor and ensure it’s set to 0”). Instead, use double spacing as usual, indent a full ½ inch (preferably using the tab button), and begin writing. The introduction section should not have a specific heading because readers assume that the first section serves as your paper’s introduction.

After addressing these formatting issues, you should create a thesis statement. This statement informs readers about how you’ve combined the literature to form an argument capable of presenting a new perspective. Once you have your thesis, start writing the introduction. Here’s a simple template for composing an introduction:

1. Begin by discussing what has been said or done on the topic.
2. Explain the issues with what has been previously discussed or done.
3. Present a solution in a concise thesis statement that can be supported by the literature.
4. Clarify how the thesis contributes to social change.

Level 1 Heading

This text marks the beginning of the essay’s body. Even though this section has a new heading, ensure that it flows from the previous one to maintain a logical progression of ideas. Start each paragraph with a sentence that links it to the previous one and summarizes the main point of the paragraph. Keep each paragraph focused on a single topic, and when you find yourself introducing a new idea, start a new paragraph. Avoid lengthy paragraphs (more than three-fourths of a page) to maintain reader engagement. Many shorter paragraphs are preferable to a few long ones. In short, think of it this way: a new idea deserves a new paragraph.

Another Level 1 Heading

Here’s another Level 1 heading. Note that when adding additional headings, you should use the APA heading styles available in your word processor’s toolbar. If you manually enter headings, you might need to remove the automatic indent that appears because the word processor assumes you’re starting a new paragraph. Again, the topic sentence in this section should explain how this paragraph is connected to or a result of what was discussed in the previous section. Consider using transition sentences to help readers see the connections between ideas. Here are a few examples of transitioning from one statement to another (or, in some cases, from one piece of literature to another):

1. Many music teachers at Olson Junior High are worried about job security (J. Thompson, personal communication, July 3, 2013), mainly due to recent state budget cuts affecting fine arts programs (Babar, 2007).
2. Obesity affects up to 17% of all children, a rise that could lead to other chronic health problems (Hera, 2008; Sinatra, 2008).

Level 2 Heading

The Level 2 heading signifies a subsection of the previous section. Using headings is an effective way to organize your paper and enhance readability. Review APA guidelines 3.02 and 3.03 to ensure correct formatting. For shorter papers, one or two heading levels are usually sufficient. You should use Level 1 headings (centered, bold font with both uppercase and lowercase) and Level 2 headings (left-aligned, bold, both uppercase and lowercase). This template provides examples of all four APA heading levels, but remember that at least two headings on the same level should precede the next heading level. For instance, a paper should have at least two Level 3 headings before introducing a Level 4 heading.

Level 3 heading. Note that Level 3 and 4 headings should be in sentence case, capitalizing only the first word and proper nouns. The number of headings needed isn’t fixed for a particular paper, but longer papers may benefit from an additional heading level, such as this Level 3 heading (which is an indented, bold, lowercase paragraph heading).

Level 4 heading. Citing sources correctly is a crucial aspect of APA style in academic work. Ensure that you cite source information throughout your paper to avoid plagiarism. It’s essential to give credit to your sources and refrain from copying others’ work at all costs. Refer to APA guidelines starting at 6.01 for instructions on citing source information in your text.

Level 4 heading. You should include at least two of each type of heading in your paper, which is why this additional paragraph is demonstrating effective heading usage. See below for more tips on using headings effectively.

Level 3 heading. Once again, if you opt for using Level 3 or 4 headings, make sure you have at least two of each heading level in your paper. Otherwise, if only one heading appears, readers might question the necessity of using a heading. If you’re unsure about how or when to use headings, consider consulting your instructor or committee chair for guidance.
