As you approach the final course in your program, it’s crucial to focus on the preparation for certification and licensure. The next step involves taking and successfully passing a national AGPCNP certification exam. Once you obtain certification, you become eligible to apply for licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in your desired state. It becomes your responsibility to gain a comprehensive understanding of the practice agreements, scope of practice, and prescriptive authority applicable in your state.

While there is a nationwide movement known as the APRN Consensus Model aimed at standardizing NP regulations, it remains a fact that requirements vary from state to state. In certain states, NPs can practice independently without the need for MD supervision. States are currently classified into full practice, reduced practice, or restricted practice categories. Full practice states grant NPs the authority to evaluate, order diagnostics, diagnose, and treat patients, and they operate under the exclusive jurisdiction of the state board of nursing. Many states might also impose requirements for prescriptive authority protocols in addition to collaborative agreements.

Another crucial aspect to consider and plan for is prescriptive authority. What legislative and advocacy activities involve nurse practitioner organizations in your state?

By Day 3

Share a summary of your findings about your state based on the questions listed above. Explain the existing regulations and any obstacles that might affect the independent practice of nurse practitioners in your state. Provide specific details, and highlight any surprises you encountered during your research.
