In this essay, we delve into the realm of EBP initiatives within the healthcare sector, exploring their implementation, sustainability, and potential for success. We will also identify an organizational change model suitable for advancing EBP sustainability in advanced nursing roles.

Numerous evidence-based practice initiatives have been introduced in our healthcare facility, demonstrating remarkable success and sustainability. One noteworthy EBP initiative revolved around the strict adherence to infection control protocols, a particularly vital aspect during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. These measures encompassed meticulous hand hygiene practices, the provision of adequate soap at handwashing stations, and the installation of additional sinks and handwashing facilities. Additionally, healthcare professionals were required to wear personal protective equipment, including double gloves, high-filtration masks like N95 respirators, and goggles. Furthermore, patients were encouraged to cover their noses and mouths, especially during coughing or sneezing (Kilbourne et al., 2019). The unwavering commitment to these infection control policies, especially within the medical/surgical unit where I was stationed, yielded significant benefits by effectively curbing the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and other hospital-acquired infections. Patient education played a pivotal role in this initiative, ensuring that patients continued to adhere to infection control practices at home, further diminishing the spread of infections.

In the context of advanced nursing roles, the Iowa model of organizational change emerges as an ideal choice for enhancing the sustainability of EBP initiatives. This model encourages nurses to leverage research findings to enhance patient care and overall healthcare quality. The Iowa model aligns with the problem-focused and knowledge-focused triggers inherent in EBP initiative implementations, where the primary objective is to address existing issues or disseminate knowledge to fellow healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to the delivery of high-quality care (Cullen et al., 2020). The Iowa model’s appropriateness stems from its structured approach, involving various healthcare providers in the change implementation process. As identified using this model, the emergence and rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus posed a significant problem, prompting healthcare facilities to prioritize its resolution. Collaborative efforts among healthcare providers and stakeholders were crucial in developing, evaluating, and implementing proposed EBP changes. This process included the formulation of a PICOT question to critically evaluate pertinent research, with ongoing assessments ensuring sustainable results dissemination (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017).
