PSYC 6717 Discussion: Behavior and Environment
Behavior can be described as how a living being interacts with its surroundings. It encompasses the actions and reactions we engage in as we navigate our environment. An example of behavior in my daily life is my regular exercise routine. I exercise because it has positive outcomes for me, like staying fit, maintaining mental clarity, and feeling a sense of reward. Response, on the other hand, is our reaction to a specific question or experience. Responses come in various forms, such as answering a question, showing an emotional reaction, or taking action. It’s a specific instance of behavior. There are different examples of responses and response classes:
– Example: Monica opens the rice pot, takes a handful of rice, and throws it at her parents.
– Response class: attention

– Example: Alisia is walking down the sidewalk when she suddenly stumbles over a ball and falls. Her immediate reaction is to yell “ouch.”
– Response class: attention
A response class is a set of responses that achieve the same outcome in the environment, even if they may seem different. In essence, it’s a group of behaviors that serve a similar purpose.

For example, when it comes to cleaning the dishes, whether you use a sponge or a dishwasher, both actions belong to the same response class because they share the common goal of getting the dishes clean.

Discussion: Behavior and Environment
“Behavior analysis is characterized by a functional analysis of the effects of the behavior on the environment. A response class is a group of responses with the same function (that is, each response in the group produces the same effect on the environment)” (Cooper et al., 2020, p. 27).
The infographic below presents three examples of response classes. For instance, behaviors like screaming, throwing, hitting, and name-calling are specific instances of responses. These actions are grouped together because they all aim to gain attention, making their response class “attention.”

To Prepare:
1. Review the Learning Resources for this week, including the required weekly media, to gain an understanding of the relationship between behavior and environment, and related terminology.
2. Consider your own behavioral repertoire and identify examples of behavior, response, and response class. Review the interactive media in the Learning Resources, “Response and Response Class.”
By Day 4 of Week 7
Post a definition and an example of each of the following from your own behavioral repertoire:
1. Behavior
2. Response
3. Response Class
Read your colleagues’ postings.
Note: For this discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings. Remember, once you click on Submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts, and cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking on Submit!
By Day 6 of Week 7
Respond to at least two colleagues’ posts by expanding on their examples of behavior, response, and response class.
Make sure to support your posts and responses with specific references to behavior-analytic theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Walden Library and/or internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your posts and responses. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources PSYC 6717 Discussion: Behavior and Environment.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights that you have gained because of your colleagues’ comments.
Behavior refers to how an individual interacts with their environment, involving the movement of their body (Cooper, J., Heron, T., & Heward, W., 2019). In my daily routine, walking on the treadmill is a behavior I engage in regularly. A response is an action carried out by an organism’s effector (Cooper, J., Heron, T., & Heward, W., 2019). After my treadmill session, I lift weights three times a week to keep my body toned. A response class is a group of responses with the same function that produces the same effect on the environment (Neuringer, 2009). An example from my behavioral repertoire is cooking dinner for the family.
