Applied behavior analysis emerged in the late 1950s from experimental analysis of behavior (EAB), inspired by B. F. Skinner’s operant conditioning principles. Initially, it concentrated on practical interventions for socially significant behavior. This focus differed from the basic theoretical research and analysis in contemporary applied psychology, leading to the need for a journal dedicated to the growing applied orientation.

In 1967, the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (JABA) was established to address this need, with Donald Baer, Montrose M. Wolf, and Todd Risley as the editors. In their inaugural 1968 article, “Some Current Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis,” they introduced seven criteria for applied behavior analysis.
