Purpose:

The nursing field encompasses four core concepts: Person, Environment, Health, and Nursing.

Within these concepts, diversity (culture) acts as a sub-concept that intersects with each of the four major ideas. Students have the opportunity to incorporate culture under Person. Nursing individuals bring with them definitions of these concepts that stem from their own life experiences. Embedded within these definitions are personal values, attitudes, and beliefs. This process can be likened to values clarification – comprehending what these concepts entail and what they do not.

This paper serves as a contemplation on the four key concepts and how they interact, drawing on the experiences gained during the semester. It presents a personal account of values, and as such, there are no definitive “right” or “wrong” assertions. Nevertheless, it is expected that students will address the four concepts, including culture; pinpoint significant aspects of each concept; establish connections among them; scrutinize and assess alternate viewpoints; and reach conclusions that logically emerge from the student’s values regarding Person, Environment, Health, and Nursing.

The paper provides insight into the student’s capacity for critical thinking. The criteria for evaluating critical thinking include:
