Nurs 6051 Discussion: The Application of Data to Problem-Solving
Introduction
Understanding computer science principles as they relate to technology in nursing is essential for optimizing its use in knowledge development within the profession (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Although I wouldn’t consider myself particularly computer-savvy, I have managed to navigate and complete the tasks that are integral to my role in a state psychiatric and mental health hospital’s forensic unit. The increasing integration of technology in healthcare, particularly telehealth and telenursing, has brought about significant changes. These changes became more pronounced following the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Physicians, psychiatrists, and other clinicians reduced their physical presence on the units, and instead, iPads were introduced to facilitate virtual connections between nurses and other healthcare providers. Clinical meetings transitioned to platforms like Zoom, and email communication surged as a means of sharing ideas. This shift led to an enhanced sense of connectivity among nurses, even in the context of shift work, where reports were recorded to maintain continuity of care in the “new normal.”

Challenges arose due to the portability and user-friendliness of the iPad, which, unfortunately, lacked data storage capabilities and the ability to record conversations for future reference. The high level of patient aggression and dysregulation in our setting raised concerns about the vulnerability of these devices to damage. Additionally, when patients were admitted or psychiatric emergencies occurred, communication with attending doctors primarily relied on phone calls, leading to delays in addressing urgent issues. While real-time audio-video conferencing was utilized to address immediate situations, connectivity issues sometimes impeded these efforts. Each iPad was numbered and configured with a specific directory for storing files and folders, with unit managers overseeing their respective devices’ applications.
NURS 6050 Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health
The adoption of portable devices was a learning experience for both employees and patients. Adjustments took time, and each day brought new lessons. The long-term goal is to harness the evolving technology to make communication and data utilization easier. A nurse leader can leverage clinical reasoning and judgment by engaging with staff nurses to understand the challenges and assess their proficiency in nursing informatics.
To gather information about how workers allocate their time for various work activities, the work sampling technique, involving intermittent, instantaneous, and random direct observations during the workday, can be employed. Nursing can harness the benefits offered by mobile technologies and applications, allowing researchers, educators, and students to effectively incorporate new technologies into healthcare. This field is ripe for further exploration, knowledge exchange, and innovative practices as it progresses towards an expanded IT department (Pereira et al., 2017).
