I enjoyed reading your discussion post and was very impressed by your own personal goal to “leave my community, patients, and society in a better position that I found them”. You could not have said it any better. I believe that we are all in our profession for a reason. That each and everyone of us innately cares about how we leave this world and how much of a impact we can bring to society no matter how big or small.  We all have made an impact on people, patients, community and society as nurses. Now we all have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact as we are continuing our education and become Scholar-practitioners.

It is so wholesome to see how committed you are to your community, with the consideration of providing a free clinic on Saturdays. I can see how underserved communities would deeply benefit from a resource like this, and from a nurse like you! I am from Iowa and lived near The University of Iowa for four years. The University of Iowa has a mobile clinic that provides free care to underserved populations such as “immigrants, refugees, migrant farmworkers, individuals experiencing homelessness, low-income individuals, and people who live in rural communities” (Palma et al., 2020). 44% of the recipients report that this is the only healthcare that they receive, and 97% of recipients report that their quality of care is good or excellent (Palma et al., 2020).  With this information, it is clear that you have huge potential to make a great difference in the lives of your patients. I also agree that time management is extremely important as an online student. Many of us are working, managing families, and studying full-time. According to Martin et al., students who participate in online courses benefit from self-discipline and time management to meet deadlines (2020). A Need for Change

My name is xxxx. I have been in the medical field for 38 years as a nurse. I must say I have an addiction to floor nursing. The down side of this is floor nursing has had a negative effect on my health due to the physical nature of the job. Nursing is everything to me and I do not see myself doing any other profession. So, I decided in order to continue to do the thing I most cherish in my life, I would have to enhance my knowledge by returning to college in order fulfill my dream. I decided to get my Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). Most of my clinical experiences have been in the field of cardiology and critical care. After much research I found the area of Adult Gerontology Acute Care as a Nurse Practitioner (AGAC-NP). Voila! I immediately knew that was the perfect fit for me.

 Why Walden?

One of the reasons I chose Walden was what was written in the School of Nursing’s (SON) mission statement. Walden SON focuses on the scholar-practitioner model. The scholar-practitioner model allows one use the knowledge they possess to enhance their educational goals, in combination with developmental research (Walden 2021 para. 6)I figured that my many years of experience and knowledge would definitely be an asset as I move from novice to expert.

A Walden Promise: Social Change

Walden University promotes social change. When I hear that term I think of the way we as a society interact with one another and the byproduct of those interactions.  I wait in anticipation to see the impact Walden will have on my journey towards my contribution with regards to social change. I have been fortunate to have been in this field long enough to see the changes in nursing as it has evolved into an entity that promotes wellness. Back in the day we practiced basic nursing and now it is more of a preventative/health promotional nursing practice. The doctors wrote the orders and the nurses followed them without question. Very little patient education was used and you did not dare give your suggestion to that doctor. Thank God for change. Preventative/health promotional nursing essentially places the responsibility of maintenance care in the hands of the patient. We as nurses are responsible for providing the necessary tools the patient requires to maintain a state of individual wellness. I love nurturing and providing my patients the empowerment of knowledge. I believe this is an example of how social change can be utilized to achieve positive outcomes. Walden uses terms like dignity, individual development, and worth and how imperative they are to the advancement of social change (Walden 2021 para.4). It is like growing a garden. Walden provides the talented professors and positive role models, and we are the seeds. Once watered and nurtured we will bloom into the same if we follow the guidelines set by Walden. And in return we will follow suit and like perennials we have the ability create social change. And so the cycle begins.  A Meeting of the Minds

My name is Emelia Korkor, originally from Ghana. I am a mother of three boys. I have been a Registered Nurse for six years and graduated from Shenandoah University. It is worth to state that I have been in the nursing profession for twenty years since I have imparted into the lives of the elderly to celebrate their individualities, the middle age to manage their medications and pain levels and a preceptor to nursing students. I started as a Certified Nurse Assistance (CNA), then pursued to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and currently as a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor with both American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

As stated by Education Producer (2018), obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) allows nursing professionals to pursue careers in focus areas such as neonatal or psychiatric care. This writer however, decided not to return back to school because of financial constrain, time management and changing shift from full time to part time. I tell my daughter, an RN, that nursing is a field of opportunity and growth that you cannot get in some careers. As a single mother, this was my best and most affordable option to reach my goal and dream still to be a nurse. I have worked in various nursing areas from medical-surgical, ICU, burn units, local travel, cardiac clinic, and I currently work at a rural family medicine clinic in Baraboo, WI, as a triage and POD RN.
