Introduction

Throughout most of my nursing career, which spans about three-quarters of my experience, I practiced in the state of Arkansas. It took me a while to become comfortable with my surroundings, my unit, and my decision-making as a seasoned nurse. However, just when I was feeling settled, my family and I relocated to Washington state. This move brought about a plethora of questions regarding my current and future nursing practice. I quickly noticed that Washington is quite selective when it comes to nursing education, continuing education requirements, and even who they permit to practice within the state. Unlike Arkansas, Washington is not a compact state, and nursing licensure here is highly regulated. While the Arkansas State Board of Nursing was thorough in its regulations, the Washington State Nursing Commission goes even further to ensure that licensed professionals are held to the highest standards (NCSBN, 2020).

Formulating Questions for MSN Studies

It took nearly a decade for me to make the decision to return to school to pursue a master’s degree. During that time, I often found myself asking questions like, “When will I find the time to complete coursework?” and “How do people with families and full-time jobs manage to complete an advanced degree?” Looking back, these questions were a way of delaying the inevitable. Now that I have taken the plunge and enrolled at Walden University, my questions are more focused on achieving my goals. In Washington, nurses with advanced degrees have full practice authority, as the Washington State Legislature states, “The ARNP is prepared and qualified to assume primary responsibility and accountability for the care of patients” (WAC 246-840-300, 1997/2016). Pursuing an MSN degree has raised several questions for me:

– Will I receive adequate preparation to diagnose patients?
– Should I take the Advanced Pharmacology course on its own to absorb the information thoroughly?
– Will I gain the necessary experience to confidently interpret diagnostic tests?
– When should I begin seeking clinical placements?

Conclusion

Despite the multitude of questions that arise, I am enthusiastic about embarking on my graduate studies. This journey will open new doors for both me and my family, demonstrating to my children that hard work can lead to desired outcomes. I am certain that as I explore all that Walden University’s MSN program has to offer, more significant questions will arise. Knowing that I have a network of professionals, doctoral-level instructors, and colleagues supporting me will make a considerable difference (Walden University, 2020).
