NURS 6003 week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

Walden University’s Vision, Mission, and Goals

Introduction:
Hello, I’m Jamie Baldwin, and I’ve been a nurse for seven years now, since May. Initially, I pursued a bachelor’s in Kinesiology with the goal of helping people manage their health through exercise. However, after five years, I decided to take a different path in managing individuals’ health. After completing my associate’s degree in nursing at a local community college, I began working in the intensive care unit (ICU) right after graduation. Concurrently, I started pursuing my bachelor’s in nursing online while working full-time. After obtaining my second bachelor’s degree, I shifted my focus to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where I have spent the last four years. During this time, I have become deeply involved in patient and family-centered care, recognizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. This experience has propelled me toward my goal of becoming a family nurse practitioner, leading me to search for the right online program, NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities.

Walden’s Vision, Mission, and Goals:
When considering Walden’s vision, mission, and goals in relation to my academic and professional objectives, it’s crucial to understand my own goals. As a scholar-practitioner, my aim is to provide evidence-based care of the highest quality to every individual. Achieving this involves continuous research and critical thinking. Two statements from Walden’s vision stand out to me: “to provide an inquiry/action model of education that fosters research, discovery, and critical thinking and that results in professional excellence” and “knowledge that can be applied to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good” (Walden University, 2020b). Nursing is a field in constant evolution, driven by current research and technological advancements. This evolution reflects changes in society, emphasizing the need to adapt and provide quality patient-centered care (NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities).

Walden’s MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives:
The decisive factor in selecting Walden’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program was a specific outcome: “Exhibit ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in accordance with ethically responsible, legally accountable, specialist nursing practice” (Walden University, 2020a). Autonomy and human dignity are principles that can sometimes be overlooked when nurses are overwhelmed and stressed. These are fundamental values that I deeply cherish, and my goal is to uphold them in my role as a scholarly-practitioner. While patient autonomy has gained prominence in nursing, it may occasionally raise concerns about professional accountability and responsibility for patient welfare (Greaney & O’Mathúna, 2017). Following the completion of my MSN, I intend to work toward establishing clearer guidelines to support healthcare professionals in delivering care aligned with the patient’s preferences, free from fear of reprisal, and devoid of personal bias (NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities).

Nurs 6003: Week 1 Discussion

Walden University’s Vision, Mission, and Goals

My name is Jamie Baldwin and I have been a nurse for seven years come this May. I started with a bachelors in Kinesiology because I wanted to help people manage their health through exercise, then after five years decided I wanted to manage individuals’ health through a different platform. After two years at my local community college I completed my associates in nursing and started working in the intensive care unit immediately after graduation. Instead of waiting, I started working towards my bachelors in nursing online while working full-time. Once I completed my second bachelors I changed my patient demographic to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). During my four years in the NICU I have become more embedded in patient and family-centered care and have learned the fundamental importance of interdisciplinary care. This jump-started my goal of becoming a family nurse practitioner and my extensive search for the right online program NURS 6003 week 1Discussion: Networking Opportunities.

When discussing Walden’s vision, mission, and goals and its relationship to my academic and professional goals, it is important to recognize what goals I have. My goal as a scholar-practitioner is to provide the best evidence-based care possible to each individual, and the way to accomplish this is to continually research and think critically. The two statements that stuck with me are “to provide an inquiry/action model of education that fosters research, discovery, and critical thinking and that results in professional excellence”, and “knowledge that can be applied to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good” (Walden University, 2020b). Nursing is a field that is constantly changing and evolving based on current research and new advances in technology. This also means that societies are continually changing and it is important to meet these demands to provide quality patient-centered care NURS 6003 week 1Discussion: Networking Opportunities.

Walden’s MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives

The deciding factor for me choosing the masters in nursing program at Walden was this specific outcome: “Exhibit ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in accordance with ethically responsible, legally accountable, specialist nursing practice” (Walden University, 2020a). Autonomy and human dignity are principles that can sometimes get lost when nurses are overworked and stressed. These are important principles that I value deeply and a goal of mine is to maintain these in my practice of being a scholarly-practitioner. Although patient autonomy has become more prominent in the field of nursing “Respecting autonomy may, on occasion, lead to concerns regarding professional accountability and responsibility for patient welfare” (Greaney & O’Mathúna, 2017). After obtaining my masters in nursing I want to work towards more defined parameters to aid health professionals in providing care based on the patient’s wishes without fear of retaliation and to remove the health care professionals personal opinion on what the patient should do.
