In Week 1 of the NURS – 6052 course, the discussion revolved around exploring healthcare organizations that embrace Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). In response to this discussion, I focused on reviewing the website of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This particular organization is deeply committed to conducting research guided by the principles of EBP with the primary aim of enhancing practice guidelines and elevating the overall quality of care within healthcare organizations.

AHRQ’s dedication to EBP is evident in its core mission, which revolves around the utilization of EBP to reinforce key competencies, including “health systems research, practice improvement, and data and analytics” (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). This mission is underpinned by the organization’s objective to generate credible reports that are readily accessible to the public. Essentially, the AHRQ’s overarching goal is to leverage EBP as a foundation for providing guidance to healthcare organizations. This guidance is intended to drive improvements in the quality and safety of healthcare services delivered to patients.

Upon exploring the AHRQ website, I encountered a wealth of credible articles firmly rooted in Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). Delving into the research section of the website, I discovered a trove of articles spanning various topics, including medication error prevention, primary care, and chronic care research. An interesting study, which employed the AHRQ guidelines within its research methodology, integrated the SHARE Approach endorsed by AHRQ to enhance shared decision-making (SDM) between healthcare providers and patients. The SHARE approach comprises five distinct SDM steps designed to guide decisions concerning a patient’s care plan (Hargraves, I., Fournier, A., Monton, V., & Bierman, A., 2020). Remarkably, the study’s findings indicated that the implementation of the SHARE approach had a positive and discernible impact on communication between patients and physicians.

In a separate study, the AHRQ’s Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit played a pivotal role in conducting a brown bag medication review aimed at bolstering medication adherence. This intervention required patients to bring all their medications to their medical appointments, where they received comprehensive education about each prescribed medication (Murtha, E., Elder, B., & Faragher, M., 2019). The outcomes of this study were noteworthy, revealing that the utilization of AHRQ’s toolkit resulted in significant health improvements and a consistent adherence to medication regimens.

Before my exploration of the AHRQ website, I was unaware of the organization’s existence, and as such, my perception of it remained unchanged. However, the experience has undeniably cast AHRQ in a new light as a reliable and valuable source of information for future research endeavors. Furthermore, the accessibility of hundreds of reports on the AHRQ website, at no cost, is a valuable resource for researchers and healthcare professionals alike. In conclusion, the multitude of research studies conducted and the evidence-based findings generated by AHRQ hold great promise in enhancing the quality of healthcare services delivered to patients across the United States.

RE: Discussion – Week 1

Hi Alberto,

Your description of your experience in exploring a healthcare organization website (AHRQ) and learning about how EBP was utilized there was nicely stated. It is difficult to enculturate EBP at an organization. An article by Sanares-Carreon et al. (2015) offers an interesting perspective on how to fast track EBP at the bedside. Do you agree that this novel pathway would encourage enculturation of EBP?

Thanks,

Dr. Sullivan

Week 1(reply#1)
Hi, Exciting post!

The website of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is among my preferred healthcare organization websites. Indeed, it boasts a remarkable wealth of evidence-based research data. Medication non-adherence is a significant issue with far-reaching consequences for both patients and the healthcare system. Failing to adhere to prescribed medications can lead to the exacerbation of medical conditions, increased mortality rates, and heightened healthcare expenditures. Studies have indicated that medication non-adherence often stems from a lack of health literacy.

Week 6 Assignment: EBP Change Process Form

AHRQ’s primary mission is to assess whether the utilization of a specific tool aids medical practices in improving patients’ adherence to bringing all their medications for review during office visits. Additionally, the objective was to investigate the percentage of patients for whom drug therapy problems were identified during these reviews and whose medication regimens were subsequently modified as a result of these reviews, both before and after implementing the tool. The evaluation conducted before and after the tool’s implementation revealed compelling results. There was a threefold increase in the percentage of patients who brought all their prescription medications to office visits, accompanied by a sixfold increase in the number of prescription medications brought for review. Furthermore, the percentage of reviews in which drug therapy problems were identified doubled, as did the percentage of medication regimens revised (Weiss et al., 2016).

Maame Response to Alberto Leyva

Alberto, your post was very informative in describing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRG). Evidence-based practice is beneficial in nursing because it can reduce costs and improve the outcomes of patients.  According to Rahmayanti et al., (2020), evidence-based practice is fundamental in nursing in improving patient care. Since, 1998 AHRG became the  parental company with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)  (U. S. Preventive Services Task Force, 2020). One of the goals of the USPSTF is the use of the evidence-based practice to prevent diseases and clinical recommendations and services (U. S. Preventive Service Task Force, 2020).

The USPSTF has similar goals as AHRG. Both have a purpose for health systems in providing evidence-practice about delivering safe, high-quality, high-value healthcare and for frontline clinicians to offer strategies to high-quality, safe, high-value healthcare (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2019). The USPSTF is also bounded to evidence-based practice and tries to secure the quality of recommendations and safety.

RE: Discussion – Week 1

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the first week discussion board. For this week you are to reflect on the definition and goal of EBP. Then find a healthcare organization’s website and explore the site to determine the where and what extent EBP is evident.

It is always a good idea to use subheadings on the discussion board postings, for a couple of reasons. One it helps you to be sure you have addressed all of the expectations and two it keeps you focused. For this week your subheadings could be the following:

  • Healthcare Organization Website Review
  • EBP Utilization
  • Grounding of EBP
  • New Perception of Healthcare Organization

I look forward to reading your discussions.

Thanks

Dr. Sullivan
