According to Laureate Education (2018), nursing informatics has gained recognition as a formal specialty acknowledged by the American Nurses Association. This specialization equips nurses to acquire certifications post-graduation, enabling them to serve in various roles such as systems analysts, project leaders, quality analysts, chief nurse informatics officers, educators, and consultants within healthcare organizations. As stated by Laureate Education (2018), nurse informaticists have become an indispensable part of the healthcare team.

Nurse Informatics at Elder Services

McGonigle and Mastrian (2017) describe knowledge management systems (KMS) as repositories of information housing collective expertise derived from experience and research. This knowledge is stored in computerized systems, facilitating easy access. However, while KMS is valuable, it’s crucial that nurses maintain a patient-centered approach during encounters, ensuring that technology doesn’t overshadow human interaction. Presence and centering, as discussed by McGonigle and Mastrian (2017), emphasize the importance of nurses being fully attentive to their patients’ needs without distraction.

Organizations that promote knowledge sharing among their staff enhance professional competence and organizational engagement, thereby improving the quality of work-life for healthcare professionals (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Elder Services of Merrimack Valley (ESMV) utilizes WellSky Aging & Disability to coordinate home and community-based care. However, ESMV currently doesn’t use Wellsky to share information with external sources like physician offices, which could enhance communication and care coordination, aligning with the observations made by Shahmoradi, Safadari, and Jimma (2017).

NURS 8210 – Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology

Sophisticated electronic medical records and clinical systems generate vast amounts of patient data, making it challenging to locate critical information for patient care. The Mayo Clinic established a knowledge management program to curate, store, and disseminate clinical knowledge to support individualized patient care. This approach, as noted by Shellum, Nishimura, Milliner, Harper, and Noseworthy (2017), could also benefit home care agencies if resources allow its development.

The Future of Nursing Informatics

Vernic (2019) emphasizes the importance of including concepts related to computer technology in basic nursing training programs. They highlight various classification systems in nursing that facilitate the generation and processing of nursing databases, enhancing nursing practices. Vernic (2019) anticipates the future of nursing informatics to involve telemedicine and telenursing, emphasizing the role of technology in improving patient health. The current pandemic has made telemedicine increasingly prevalent, enabling nurses to access electronic patient records and provide healthcare information and education. The integration of information technology will enable nursing to rapidly generate and disseminate new knowledge (Vernic, 2019).

Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.
