Theoretical Models used in Practice

A model demonstrates the theorist’s interpretation of how concepts are related to one another and are developed. Models are frequently illustrated with a graphical representation. Theoretical statements, the characteristics of the model, are used as precursors to more specific theory development.

Nursing may utilize theoretical models from a variety of other disciplines such as from sociology, business, organizational leadership, biomedicine, or education.

• locate a model from a different discipline (other than nursing) that you could apply to nursing. Theoretical models can be found in a variety of other disciplines such as leadership, business, education, technology, sociology, etc.
• explain why you have chosen the model
• apply the model to your advanced practice role.
