Contrasting Nursing Evidence-Based Practice and Research

Nursing research primarily serves the purpose of generating new knowledge or validating existing theories. The research process involves a systematic scientific inquiry that aims to answer specific research questions or hypotheses, utilizing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. The research culminates in highlighting how the findings contribute to the existing knowledge base and offers recommendations for future research endeavors (Chien, 2019). On the other hand, evidence-based practice (EBP) focuses on translating existing evidence into clinical practice. Its goal is to apply the most current and reliable scientific evidence to make patient-centered decisions in the clinical context. While much of the evidence utilized in EBP originates from research (Nursing evidence-based practice vs research), it extends beyond research by considering patient preferences, values, and clinical expertise. Furthermore, even in situations where research evidence is lacking, EBP incorporates opinions and insights from experts and leaders, which are then applied in practice.

Distinguishing between a research project integrated into an evidence-based intervention project and a nursing research project aiming to create knowledge involves examining specific components. For instance, the latter typically undergoes a peer-review process and formulates a hypothesis that researchers intend to test using scientific methods. The research methods section should comprehensively describe the processes, participants, and instruments employed, along with presenting the findings, conclusions, recommendations for further research, and implications for practice (Chien, 2019). In contrast, an evidence-based project predominantly relies on thorough reviews and assessments of existing evidence that directly address all elements of a PICOT (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time) question in a meaningful manner (Buccheri & Sharifi, 2017). Such an article should include a detailed description of the processes and strategies used to synthesize literature and translate research into practice, accompanied by subsequent outcomes.
