Creating My Personal Leadership Philosophy
Personal Leadership Philosophy
In crafting my personal leadership philosophy, I’m guided by the wisdom of John Wooden, a renowned American basketball player and coach, who emphasized the power of leading by example. I firmly believe in the concept of setting a strong example as a leader. This philosophy has shaped my approach to nursing practice and how I collaborate with others. Even though I may not hold a formal leadership position, I often take on leadership roles in projects, and my colleagues turn to me for guidance when facing challenges in their daily work. As I work toward obtaining my Family Nurse Practitioner certification, I recognize the importance of enhancing my clinical reasoning and leadership skills

Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies.
My personal leadership philosophy is rooted in seven core values. I believe that effective nurse leaders prioritize trust, show respect, work diligently to achieve their goals, and inspire others to pursue the organization’s mission. I maintain composure and persistence during challenging situations, viewing every experience as an opportunity for growth, whether on a personal or clinical level. Communication, encompassing speaking, writing, and listening, holds immense value for me. Therefore, I aim to lead by example by embodying these values in every task I undertake. This includes setting an unspoken example in aspects like communication style, dress code, time management, and prioritizing self-care to prevent burnout. This aligns with the findings of Mudallal et al. (2017), which underscore the importance of leader empowering behaviors in reducing nurse burnout. According to the study, leaders who infuse purpose into their staff’s tasks and assign meaning to individual contributions elevate nurses’ sense of worth and motivation (Mudallal et al., 2017). Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies. I identify with the transformational leadership approach described by Lin et al. (2017), which significantly contributes to supervisor support. As a transformational leader, my mission is to lead and nurture strong clinical teams that provide patient-centered care and ensure patient safety in our hospital.
According to the StrengthsFinder Assessment, my top five dominant talent themes are input, individualization, relator, strategic, and learner (Gallup Access, n.d.). In the input theme, I excel at seeking innovative ideas and visionary plans from others, using them to envision the future. Within the individualization talent, I am skilled at recognizing the unique qualities of individuals, allowing me to engage in meaningful conversations to understand their goals, strengths, interests, and experiences. In the strategic theme, I use language to express innovative ideas and alternative problem-solving approaches in a team setting. As a learner, I have a strong desire to continually learn and improve myself. Finally, as a relator, I find fulfillment in building close relationships and working collaboratively to achieve common goals (Gallup Access, n.d.).
Based on the results of my StrengthsFinder Assessment, I aim to strengthen two core values: the ability to influence and effective communication with others. Effective communication is a fundamental skill for nurse leaders, as highlighted by Jankelová and Joniaková (2021). They note that effective communication and influencing skills enable nurse leaders to create positive work environments, leading to improved patient outcomes and higher staff satisfaction (Jankelová & Joniaková, 2021). To enhance these skills, I plan to watch educational videos, observe experienced mentors, and attend workshops and seminars focused on communication and influencing techniques Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies.
In conclusion, my personal leadership philosophy revolves around leading by example and embodying seven core values. I seek to strengthen my ability to influence and communicate effectively, recognizing the importance of these skills in nursing leadership. As I work toward becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, I aspire to lead with conviction and inspire my teams to deliver patient-centered care and ensure patient safety.
